Wrinkles Q & A
What causes wrinkles?
Wrinkles are a natural part of aging. As you age, your skin loses its elasticity and becomes fragile. Less collagen is produced, and your skin’s natural production of oil decreases, causing your skin to lose moisture.
Fat found deep under your skin also diminishes with age, causing your skin to loosen and sag. This can lead to deep crevices and lines.
Beyond aging, some things can increase the frequency and severity of wrinkles, and make them develop prematurely. These include:
Exposure to UV light
Smoking
Repeated facial expressions
Can you prevent wrinkles?
Although wrinkles happen to everyone, there are preventive measures you can take to reduce their severity and frequency. To stop wrinkles from getting worse, you must protect your skin from the sun.
Use sunscreen (minimum SPF 30) every day, and replace it often, especially when outdoors. Dr. Bushore also recommends wearing protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses.
Keeping your skin moisturized can also reduce wrinkles, as can eating a healthy diet rich in whole foods.
If you smoke cigarettes, quitting will improve your skin’s tone and texture, and can prevent the development of more wrinkles.
How are wrinkles treated?
When you see Dr. Bushore to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, he may offer a variety of treatment options, depending on your skin’s severity.
A topical retinoid cream can be applied daily to improve your skin’s elasticity. These creams can make you more sensitive to sunlight and must be accompanied by sunscreen.
For more severe cases, he may recommend certain procedures to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. These may include the use of dermal fillers and injectables, such as:
BotoxⓇ
JuvedermⓇ
VolumaⓇ
RestylaneⓇ
VolbellaⓇ
In other cases, he may recommend a chemical peel, which deeply exfoliates dry, dead skin cells, allowing the new, fresh skin beneath to become visible.
Dr. Bushore also uses a variety of innovative skin-resurfacing techniques, including CuteraⓇ Laser Genesis. This laser device uses specialized light technology to improve your skin’s texture and boost collagen production, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
The team at Balcones Dermatology and Aesthetics may recommend a specific skincare regimen. They offer the Skin Type SolutionsⓇ system, which has skincare regimens for 16 different skin tones and types.
If wrinkles are making you look and feel older than you’d like, contact Dr. Bushore for a consultation. You can call the office to schedule your appointment or book online.
