PRP for Hair Restoration Q & A

What is PRP therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an innovative treatment that harnesses the natural properties of your blood platelets. Platelets contain proteins that form clots when you cut yourself. These proteins also help your body repair and rebuild damaged tissues.

PRP therapy involves drawing a small amount of your blood and then processing it to separate the platelets and plasma from other blood components. Your provider then injects the plasma into the target location.

As soon as the plasma re-enters your body, it goes to work, increasing circulation, recruiting stem cells to the area, and improving cellular function. PRP therapy offers a natural alternative for treating soft-tissue injuries, rejuvenating your skin, as well as reducing hair loss.

How does PRP restore my hair?

Hair loss caused by androgenetic alopecia, also called male or female pattern baldness, occurs due to a shrinking of your hair follicles. As the follicle shrinks, the hair it produces comes in thinner and weaker, making it more likely to break or fall out.

When your provider injects PRP into your hair follicles, it enhances the regeneration of follicular cells. As follicles become healthier, hair thickness, strength, and rate of growth increase. Over time, this leads to a reduction in hair loss and an improvement in new hair growth.

What should I expect from PRP for hair restoration?

Dr. Bushore and the team at Balcones Dermatology & Aesthetics typically perform PRP for hair loss over three treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart.

Dr. Bushore begins by drawing a small amount of your blood from your arm, then spinning it in a centrifuge to separate it into the PRP serum. Next, he injects the PRP serum into the areas where you have hair loss.

It can take several months before you enjoy the full results of your PRP treatment. Maintenance treatments every 4-6 months can help keep your hair looking healthy and full while preventing additional hair loss.

Am I a candidate for PRP for hair restoration?

PRP can address hair loss in most men and women with androgenetic alopecia. However, candidacy might be ruled out for the following reasons:

  • Heavy smoking
  • Use of blood thinner medications
  • Some medical conditions, such as thyroid disease or blood disorders

A consultation with Dr. Bushore can determine if PRP is right for you. Call Balcones Dermatology & Aesthetics to make an appointment, or book online.
