6 skin care tips to follow after an injectable treatment

While we may suggest specific skin care recommendations for you, there are a few universal suggestions everyone should follow after undergoing dermal injections.

Here are six tips to keep in mind:

  1. Don’t touch your face

Touching or rubbing your face can displace the new filler in your face. We suggest that you avoid touching your face for up to three days after your injection, giving the filler time to settle.

  1. Don’t use products on treated skin

For the first 24 hours, don’t use any products on your treated skin, including cleansers, moisturizers, or makeup. You can gently wipe your face with a cool cloth, making sure not to press down on your skin.

After 24 hours, you can start using moisturizers, sunscreen, and other products. If you notice any irritation in your skin, stop using products and call the office.

  1. Do low-impact exercises

Avoid strenuous exercises and activities that increase blood circulation to your face for at least 24 hours.

You can stay active with low-impact exercises like walking for a day or two after your treatment to protect your results.

  1. Stay out of direct sunlight

Your skin may be extra sensitive after an injectable treatment. We recommend that you stay out of direct sunlight for at least seven days after your injection.

It’s also critical that you apply high-quality sunscreen to your skin anytime you go outdoors to keep your skin healthy and young-looking.

  1. Bathe in cooler water

Don’t take hot baths or showers or use a hot tub for at least 24 hours after treatment. The hot water can increase blood flow to your face and cause fillers to shift.

  1. Avoid consuming alcohol

Drinking alcohol after dermal fillers or Botox therapy can increase your risk for noticeable bruising at the injection sites.

If injections do cause bruising or swelling soon after treatment, you can place ice packs on treated areas for a few minutes at a time. Be sure to use a towel or other protective covering over the ice pack to prevent skin damage.

The longevity of dermal injectables depends on the type of filler you have. Board-certified dermatologist David A. Bushore, MD, FAAD, monitors your results and can recommend maintenance injections as needed.
